4empowerment supports the idea that the Web is a world full of information, a great place to explore, and a valuable teaching tool for everyone, including children. But limits and guidelines are a good idea. Below we have gathered some tips for safe surfing online. This is a great place for both new and advanced Web users to find information on using the Internet wisely.
1. Never give out the following information to anyone you meet on the Internet or on an online bulletin board:
You cannot be sure who will read this information, and you can't be assured that this information won't be posted somewhere. Whenever you can, use a screen name. We encourage you to do so.
2. Keep your passwords private, even from your best friend! Your online service should never ask for them, so neither should anyone else.
3. If you ever see something on the Internet that makes you uncomfortable, tell your parents or teacher right away. You can also send a report to the Web Police.
4. Remember that nothing you write on the Web is completely private -- including e-mail. So be careful and think about what you type and who you tell.
5. Never make plans to meet an online "friend" in person without first consenting your parent or teacher. If your parent or teacher thinks it is OK, make sure they accompany you and meet the person in a public place.
6. WHEN IN DOUBT -- always ask your parents or teacher for help -- and just LOG OFF if you're not sure! You can always go back online later.
