- 2003 STUDENT SHORT SCREENPLAY COMPETITION. The Austin
Film Festival has partnered with 4empowerment to sponsor the Student Short Screenplay
Competition. The competition encourages students to improve their writing and
storytelling skills by recognizing and rewarding their achievements. All students
who submit their film and/or screenplay by the early deadline of Friday, May
23, 2003, will have their names entered in a raffle to win FINAL DRAFT Professional
Screenwriting Software. The late and final deadline is Friday, September 5,

- TEXAS WRITER'S MONTH. May 2003 marks the tenth annual Texas Writer's Month,
a celebration of writers, readers, and books. The 2003 ONE BOOK/ONE TEXAS
selection is GOODBYE TO A RIVER by John Graves. A curriculum and study guide
for GOODBYE TO A RIVER has been prepared for book groups, librarians, and

- VLAD CODREA SELECETED AS 4E's FIRST STUDENT PROFILE. Vlad, a student at
LBJ Science Academy, is a recent national winner of the Siemens Westinghouse

Upcoming Events:
- 2003 SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST INTERACTIVE FESTIVAL. The event will be held from
March 7th-11th at the Austin Convention Center. Cyberways and Waterways was
a previous winner of the SXSW Interactive's Outstanding Achievement in Education
Award. Our very own Steve Amos will be part of a panel on March 9th from 5-6pm
discussing educational technology.
- UPCOMING EARTH DAY WATER MONITORING EVENTS. On this 33rd Earth Day, Texas
Watch volunteer monitors and professional monitors join forces to participate
in A Day In the Life of Texas Waters. This statewide data collection and watershed
education event is intended to acknowledge the contributions of volunteer
water quality monitors and to collect a "snapshot" of water conditions. Monitor
your site between April 15th and April 29th, and send us your data to be included

FOR EDUACTORS. The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary and the Gulf
of Mexico Foundation would like to announce that information about the 2003

- FEATURED ACTIVITY. GOT WATER? Do your students think water is an unlimited
resource? Have fun exploring where water comes from and how precious it really
is in Water, Water, Everywhere? from the AccessNature(tm) curriculum.
- TPWD HORNED LIZARD ESSAY CONTEST. Deadline is March 1. Prizes in each age division
will be an outdoor learning kit valued at $100. Best classroom or group effort
in each age group wins $1,000 to cover expenses for a field trip to a TPWD wildlife
