News 8 Austin, September 2, 2001
The Austin Film Festival is little bit over a month away, but as part of the Student Short Screenplay Competition sponsored by Cyberways and Waterways in collaboration with the Austin Film Festival, eight middle and high school students from the Austin area were top winners for their scripts chosen out of 60 statewide entries.The individual winners are: Malcom Henderson from Murchison Middle School who wrote "Almost Home" and Mario A. Alvarez from Westwood High for "Swimming to the Other Side."
Awards were also given for collaborative efforts to Sarah Buchanan, Ryan Reid, amd Kathryn Alexander also from Murchison for their script called "Kidnapped."
Round Rock High School student, Lisa Merkel, Wynne McCartney and Alex Hambrick took the prize for "Parking Lot."
Each student will recieve two passes to the Austin Film Festival beginning October 11. Due to the success of the program, next year the competition will be nationwide.
