Van Vleck Library to Offer Tech Courses, Later Hours

From Staff Reports, The Daily Tribune, November 2000

Van Vleck's Herman Middle School has received a state grant to allow for online learning.

This learning is called Cyberways and Waterways (CW).

CW is an innovative online and field study learning program that integrates technology into education by means of an interdisciplinary curriculum that is centered on Texas' rivers, creeks, coast-lines and ocean.

CW gives teachers the knowledge and skills to integrate technology skills, as they explore the capabilities of the Internet.

CW students are conducting water quality field testing along the Colorado and Rio Grand rivers.

Herman Middle School students joined in the CW grant last year, as they received more than $37,000 worth of computers, software, and water testing equipment.

During this school year, 37 schools in Texas and more than 50,000 students will benefit from the state grant.

Herman Middle School funding will allow school officials to keep their campus library and computer labs open in the evenings for students to use this technology.

This was made possible after they received $1,700 that will pay for librarians and computer-technology personnel to work during the evening.

The library and computer labs will open on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and for more information, contact the school at 245-8518.

School officials may offer computer program courses like Microsoft Power Point on certain days.

There will be an open house Thursday, Nov. 18 to introduce parents to this opportunity and have a calendar for the nights and special classes.

School officials said the grant will give parents the chance to get involved in their child's educational curriculum.
