Hebert Presides Over His Last Meeting as LC-M Superintendent

The Orange Leader - Volume 125, No. 260, November 14, 2000

Dr. H. Lamar Hebert Monday presided over his last meeting of the Little Cypress-Mauriceville school board as Superintendent of the district. "If there has to be a last meeting that I have to preside over, this is the best one I believe I could have picked." He said during on of the highlights of the meeting.

On October 30, Dr. Hebert received a letter of congratulations from Karen Case, Associate Commissioner of Accountability and School Accreditation for the Texas Education Agency. The letter read in part: "…the Texas Education Agency and the Department of Accountability and School Accreditation congratulate you, your staff members, and your students for the academic performance on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) during the 1999-2000 school year. You are also congratulated for meeting the state's standard on the dropout rate for 1998-1999…Please continue your strong efforts for the children of Texas…"

Dr. Hebert presented the principal of each campus in the district with a certificate thanking them for their efforts.

Another highlight of the meeting was Rep. Ron Lewis who came to the meeting as a parent. His young son, Alex, along with a classmate, displayed a state flag Lewis had obtained for the class. It had flown over the state Capitol Building in Austin. The younger Lewis' class had been studying "Community Helpers" and Rep. Lewis told the class how individual communities are helped at the state level. Miss Duffy teaches the class. Lewis also told the board how pleased he is with the district. "It is one of the greatest schools I've ever been involved with, and I've been involved with education for the past 16 years," he said.

Susan Pennington was also handing out recognitions and awards. These were for teachers serving as 1999-2000 Brazos-Sabine TIE Grant Facilitators - at least one on each district campus - who instruct and mentor other teachers in the use of new educational software the school has obtained.

"We can buy all the equipment and software in the world," said Dale Moreau, board president, "But we need people to teach us how to use them to their best and fullest effect, otherwise, they're useless to us. We thank these dedicated teachers for doing that for us."

The district was also given a clean bill of financial health in a recent audit.

One disappointment that the Board heard about was the new Little Cypress Intermediate School may not be ready to open by the time school begins in August of 2001. The supplier of the steel beams to be used in the construction will not be able to deliver them on time. The contractor is looking for another supplier who can deliver the beams sooner, but the project is still expected to lad behind schedule because of the setback.

Greg Hale, public relations director for the district, suggested to the board that from now through May, he be allowed to present one campus and its progress and accomplishments each month.

"Now, they're all presented at just one meeting, and I feel that you can't appreciate the real status of each campus that way," he said. He also told the board that biology teacher Woody Cox had received six watercraft as donations from local residents who wanted to help with the Environmental System's Cyberways and Waterways TIE Grant Program.

Greg Ball donated an aluminum boat, F.M. Chelette of Jasper donated an aluminum canoe, Pam Dale donated a wooden canoe in memory of her late husband, Freddie R. Dale, Mike Gramblin donated a fiberglass canoe, Amanda Hooper donated an aluminum boat, and Martha O'Fiel donated an aluminum boat. These craft were accepted by the board with thanks to the donors, and are to be used by Woody Cox and his students to clear trash and debris from Little Cypress Bayou.

The board also agreed to fill a vacancy on the school board by appointing another member. Dale Moreau asked the other board member to think of qualified people that the board could appoint. The appointee will serve until school board elections are held in May.
