JUST CHECKING THE WATER: New Grant Buys Testing Equipment for Environmental Science Classes

By Victor Kamantauskas, Photo Editor, The Bear Facts, Volume No. 30, Issue No. 1, May 2000

Woody Cox is an Integrated Physics and Chemistry, IPC, and Environmental Science teacher at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School. He is a certified water quality monitor for the Texas Watch program and is the sponsor for LC-M's Key Club organization. As a certified monitor for the Texas Watch Program, he is required to monitor a site once a month for one year. Cox has been monitoring Little Cypress Bayou for over five years for pollutants, acidity level, and dissolved oxygen.

Cox's Environmental Science class is a hands on science class for juniors and seniors. The class focuses on the world and local environment. All students in the class are trained to become certified Texas Watch Monitors through a three stage training program.

Just recently Cyberways and Waterways, an Internet environmental organization, awarded LC-M with a grant. This grant provides equipment and training for 37 schools and 50,767 students. Equipment provided to LC-M includes a laptop computer, multimedia projector, see-u-see me computer camera, electronic whiteboard, water testing kits, a Global Positioning System device, a digital camera, and binoculars.

To receive this equipment, Cox and his environmental science students are required to do three things: monitor water quality, bio-diversity, and participate in garbology, the collection and recording of garbage, at Little Cypress Bayou.
