Herman Middle School, Palacios High Take Part in Unique River Project

By Sheri Denton, The Daily Tribune (Bay City, Texas), February 2, 2000

Eighth-grade students in Meredith Keelan's marine science class have taken on a new challenge with the Cyberways and Waterways program.

The program, sponsored by over 30 public, non-profit and private organizations, combines technology with environmentally-based curriculum to give a current and accurate view of the quality of the Colorado River and Rio Grande River watersheds.

Thirteen school districts are taking part in the program that puts accurate, frequently updated water quality test results on the Internet. O.H. Herman is the only middle school in the program, which also includes Palacios High School.

Students spend time weekly visiting tributaries of the Colorado River around the county as well as Matagorda Beach. They use high-tech equipment to survey levels of contaminants in the water.

Once such contaminant they keep a watch on is Ecola. Large levels of Ecola indicate dumping of human and animal waste in the body of water.

With a recent one-year grant from Cyberways and Waterways, a 4empowerment.com project, students in Keelan's classes are enjoying four new Dell computers, a laptop, a digital camera, a printer, new water testing equipment and video conferencing equipment.

Not only will the students' findings be published on-line, but they'll also be able to communicate with students in other school districts.

The participating schools stretch from Colorado City down to Palacios and El Paso down to Brownsville.

The project teaches students a variety of academic lessons including high level math, physical geography and economics.

The Cyberways and Waterways website should be up and running by mid-February, b ut local students are already preparing for the task. Last Friday, O.H. Herman's scientists began their water testing, being careful to document everything and apply the proper figure correction factors.

"Participating in Cyberways and Waterways helps my students take their skills to the next level. It helps them understand how to apply what they've learned in class," said Keelan.
