Preserving Your Biodiversity Samples
For verification, if you can, it is important that you preserve the one sample per species. Keep the bugs separated by type and use small vials or jars filled with rubbing alcohol. Any air at the top will decrease sample storage time. Use a pencil to label a strip of bonded paper with Date, Monitor Name, Site Name, Identification and Number of Organisms. Put the label IN the jar with the organisms. If you attach the label to the outside of the jar, you will be unable to examine the contents without opening the jar.To help you get started, use the Macroinvertebrate Key. Keep in mind that we are collecting insects, fish and shellfish.
Note: It is very important that the exact dimensions of the net, the distance of each kick net's push and the kick net's mesh size be noted on your Biodiversity Monitoring Form: Step 1 and Step 2.
