Mike Rich
Screenwriter--Mike wrote "Finding Forrester" (2000) which starred Sean Connery and Rob Brown and "The Rookie" (2001) starring Dennis Quaid and Rachel Griffiths.

Q. What does your typical workday look like?

A. I try to maintain a routine that allows me to write regularly. I wrote "Finding Forrester between 2 pm and 4 pm every afternoon and worked on "The Rookie" during rehearsals for "Finding Forrester". I average writing about six pages every day, which doesn't sound like much, but I've found that after that the quality of my writing starts to fall off. I also try to devote at least two hours to rewriting pages I've already got down. "Finding Forrester" went through six rewrites before it was considered final.

Q. What advice would you give students who are interested in writing screenplays?

A. Be persistent. Write everyday. Read good screenplays, new and old. I've read everything from "The African Queen" to "Reservoir Dogs" and learned a lot. Good screenplays teach you plenty. (Try scriptcrawler.net for a free online search).

Q. What do you like best about your job/career?

A. I like developing and telling a story. It's very rewarding to work the story through from idea to script form and see it begin to come alive through actors. And I'm motivated by the themes you see in my scripts: going after your dreams and not being afraid of your own abilities because I feel on some level my own career illustrates these themes. After all if it can happen to a first-time screenwriter in Austin, it can happen anywhere!

Q. Who is your favorite author?

A. I like William Goldman (Lord of the Flies).
