"The economic value of wetlands in the United States is over $4 trillion in real dollars, yet we have lost over 50% of wetlands due to development in the last 100 years."
Q. What does your typical workday look like?
A. The nice thing about this job is that it varies from day to day. I usually get in between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m., have coffee, read the paper, answer e-mails, write, and prepare lectures. I teach a course in aquatic biology where some days we have labs and go on field trips to area rivers and streams, or we may work on organism identification in the lab. Later, I meet with graduate students, go over the their projects with them. Sometimes there are committee meetings, working on manuscripts, reviewing manuscripts, etc. Sometimes I'm invited to go to Washington D.C. to serve on review panels for the Environmental Protection Agency or National Science Foundation. Some days I do field work or work on research projects. A couple of weeks ago, students and I were on a boat in the lower Rio Grande tracking grass carp in the river by radio telemetry. And the list could go on and on.
Q. What kinds of coursework and experiences should kids pursue if they're interested in your field?
A. Students should get as much math, science, and writing that they can, and they should get some involvement with local or national environmental organizations
Q. What do you find most frustrating about your job?
A. The general public's lack of awareness of the importance of water and ecosystems in our lives. For example, a recent article showed the economic value of wetlands in the United States is over $4 trillion in real dollars. Yet, we have lost over 50% of wetlands due to development in the last 100 years.
Q. What is your all-time favorite Web site?
A. www.benthos.org is the North American Benthological Society's home page and www.amrivers.org. These are two of the leading organizations studying rivers.
